Résumé
The Paramount Chief of the Bakweri people, Chief Dr Esuka Lifafa Mbella Endeley V, has warned that Mount Cameroon could be approaching another eruption, urging the government to strengthen disaster preparedness. Speaking on CRTV’s Governance and Follow-up programme, the traditional ruler declared, “The mountain has told us it is ready!” He cited indigenous knowledge suggesting that the volcano has erupted ten times in 200 years, with intervals of about 20 to 25 years. He called for urgent measures, including a firefighting station and improved evacuation routes, to protect communities around the mountain. The warning has renewed public concern following a brief tremor felt in parts of Buea on October 23. However, the chief’s statement is not an official scientific forecast of an imminent eruption.
